Although abounding in reminders of the past, York is very much a city for the here and now, with excellent shops, bars and restaurants, many along the River Ouse. Surrounding it are the medieval city walls – the longest and best preserved in England – and many of the gates that once allowed access to the city.
Walk the walls for wonderful views towards the city and towering York Minster. Standing proud on a hill, this cavernous church is the seat of the Archbishop of York, the 2nd highest position in the Church of England.
A little south is The Shambles, a narrow street with medieval buildings that now house quaint shops. Going further back in time is the Jorvik Centre, a fascinating museum showcasing the city’s Viking remains. You can even have a go at archaeology yourself at the DIG excavation pits, with replica finds from York’s Roman, Viking, medieval and Victorian eras.
Other York attractions include the National Railway Museum, home to the Flying Scotsman and Mallard trains. Around 30 minutes’ drive away is Castle Howard, a stately home with over 1000 acres of grounds.
Leeds-Bradford Airport is the nearest airport, and there is a great range of hotels, B&Bs and guest houses in York and the outskirts available on Booking.com.

I already know more than 20 cities in the United Kingdom, without a doubt York is in my top 5 favorite cities to visit. The city's atmosphere is incredible, there are lots of things to see and do. If you are visiting the UK, go to York, you won't regret it.
Sensational. Couldn't fault it one bit. Staff were polite and welcoming, facilities are great. Room is superb value for money. We had a room with a view which overlooked 'Thor's' with York Minster cathedral on the horizon. Hotel was extremely clean, ample parking, sizeable and spacious rooms. Location is perfect for train station (right next to it) and a 5-minute walk to the city centre, 10-minute walk to the Railway Museum. Not much more you could ask for!
The room was very well furnished and clean. The bathroom was also a very good size with a nice large shower. The tea and coffee in the room were replenished and the room was cleaned and beds made and towels changed which was very much appreciated. The staff were also friendly. The hotel was handy for the Jorvik Viking Centre, York Castle Museum, York Minster, Clifford Tower and the Shambles.
Lovely hotel very close to the gates of old York. The staff is exceptional, very kind and helpful. They serve good breakfast and they have a restaurant, and beer garden where they serve pizza. We enjoyed pizza in the beer garden when we arrived and it was very good. We had a family room which was good size and quite comfortable. Good shower and beds. We would stay here again.
Loved staying in this historic, centrally located pub/hotel. Only four rooms you can stay in, so I felt lucky to be able to stay here. It's billed as the most haunted hotel in York, so I thought I was going to be kept awake all night by ghosts -- alas, I slept like a log and no paranormal phenomena (that I'm aware of). Bathroom was surprisingly chic! Breakfast was delicious.
The hotel is in an excellent location for visitors to York, walking distance to various heritage sites. The building itself is very historic, charming and clean, I was upgraded to a junior suite (thank you) which gave a little more space for the 3 night visit. The room was comfortable and well serviced. Breakfast was nice, bar was pleasant and the staff were helpful.
The hotel is located near the centre and looks nice. Everything you might want to see in York is in walking distance.
The lobby and bar were really nice and you could always find some people there, drinking a beer or playing pool.
The room we stayed in was nice and spacious and it all looked clean.
The staff was incredibly kind and willing to help.
Hotel is located very close to the city centre. Short walking distance to everything you would find interesting during your stay in York. People working in the hotel are very friendly and helpful. Room was excellent- big bathroom, comfortable bed. Hotel is very clean and well maintained. Breakfast was delicious too! Highly recommended!
After 28 days of traveling and staying in a wide range of places The Dean Court in York was wonderful! It was about 37 degrees and we had a room with air conditioning they showed us around the hotel and brought ice and water to the room. Just those small gestures and I felt pampered! My bed was wonderfully comfortable.
Great location and beautifully decorated. it had the best bathroom out of all the places we stayed in England. It was right on the bus line and so convenient to get into city center every day. The breakfast was wonderful ever morning. The pub is really nice and the staff is super friendly. We really loved the place.
We loved this place. Gorgeous hotel with amazing staff! Loved the decor & the restaurant was fabulous. Great value for money it felt like a 5 star treatment the whole time we were there. Location is walking distance to the centre of York. We also had treatments in the spa which I highly recommend.
The hotel was clean and beautifully furnished (and smelt nice). The staff were lovely and friendly and genuinely wanted to help. The extra touches in the room were nice too. Breakfast was amazing! The location was fab being only a few mins walk to York City centre and on a road with fab eateries.
Loved my stay here! I would book it instantly. I don’t think I’ve ever stayed in a hotel which such character. the small details of choosing your soaps, and the entrance way, to the very comfortable beds and room decor.

The hotel was great. It’s only a 15 minute walk into central York. The Twin room was great for my daughter and myself. All the staff made an effort to chat with my daughter, which she loved. Will defiantly be back.
Centrally located in York city centre. Not far from the train station. The hotel had ample parking also if you need it. The hotel room was large, well laid out and comfortable. Great breakfast also.
City Centre close to hotel.valet parking beneath hotel is a little cheaper than the carpark opposite. Parking is a problem in York.
Had a room overlooking Clifford's Tower.
