If you plan on going to Bukit Lawang we would definitely recommend staying at the Jungle Inn! It’s right at the river curve, all the rooms look at the river and the restaurant too! We had the superior room and would recommend to spend the extra bucks for this dreamy room! It comes with a big terrace looking at the river and the jungle and an outside bathroom that makes every shower feel like you’re in a five star hotel! The bed is big and comfortable. We did not sleep this well in a very long time. Alde and all the other staff are very welcoming and kind and always made sure we had everything we needed. The food at the restaurant is so delicious! You can sit inside or outside and enjoy the view while eating and drinking like royalty! We are vegan and the staff at the Jungle Inn had absolutely no problem catering to our needs. The restaurant has a few board games and in the evenings you can sit and play games alone or with others. When we were there some of the staff sat together making music which made the evening so beautiful. Btw. if you’re lucky, you already get to see some Makkah monkeys or even orang utans from this hotel!

Sam’s Bungalows is quiet and isolated. You stay at the top of this narrow way that locate most of the tourist housing in Bukit Lawang. Therefore you will find lots of local restaurants while listening to jungle sounds. Sam’s kitchen is definitely one of the best, the food is excellent and the service provided is really good. We also used their taxi service from Medan airport. Perfect stay in Bukit Lawang!

The place is super well located and close to bars, restaurants and local shops. The views from the room face the river and the jungle which was great.
The staff and management were incredibly helpful throughout our stay and they also went above and beyond to deliver my wife's glasses back to Singapore after forgetting them in our room.

5 starts, we are a couple, at our mid 30's we like to have a bit of a nice guesthouse, clean and friendly staff.
Well, if this is what you also want, then we would like to recommend Sahnan's guesthouse. Business is runned by the family, son is perfectly English speaking. Washing service, very tidy and quick, good wifi, good kitchen as well.
We recommend tis place.

Tia, the manager was fantastic from start to finish. I had called her weeks before arriving and she arranged the transfer from the airport, guide and was helpful in every way. The meals were good too and she was just great to be around. Kind and caring. The location is great and on the last morning an Orangutan and her baby came to feed on the Mango tree next to the bungalow.

This is as good as it gets. The owner (Udin) is a very nice guy and helped me with organizing my jungle trek as well as transportation. The guesthouse is located in a very nice part of Bukit Lawang, surrounded by lots of nature. You can also take a dip in the river right in front of it.
I was also very happy with the food. Small menu, but all the dishes were excellent, homemade and with local ingredients. You will not find western food here, which is a good thing.

I made a 2-day 1-night visit to Bukit Lawang and the jungle with a colleague on short notice. We both had our own little cottage. Asim Paris Guesthouse arranged the transport to Bukit Lawang, the jungle tour, and the transport to Medan Airport. We enjoyed the dinner at the guesthouse. Also the breakfast with banana pancakes and fresh fruit was really nice. During the jungle tour with tour guides Bim(bo) and Martin we spotted a lot of Urangutans and other monkeys. Overall we had a short but very nice stay.

We love everything about this place.
We love everything about this place. It's our second visit and I would come back anytime. The location is spectacular and the views from the room are amazing. Such a haven of peace and quiet. You can cool down in the river just in front of the property. The jungle trek is highly recommended. Such a beautiful rainforest and seeing orangutans up close in their natural habitat is certainly very memorable. The staff is also great and helpful. Rizky always smiles, Julie always happy to help, Arif always ready to show you the treasures of the jungle. If I remembered all the names, I would list them here too. The room is comfortable and as described. This place really is a gem!

I loved how the bungalow was away from the river and close to the park. Saw wildlife around the bungalow. I didn't like that I had to ride a motorbike without a helmet for the village excursion.

This is a very special place where you are close to nature.
This is a very special place where you are close to nature. The hotel is very relaxed with lovely food and helpful staff. The owner is always on hand. Any questions I had were answered quickly by WhatsApp in advance. They even organised transport to and from the airport for me. My jungle guides were excellent and great fun to be with. They looked after me so well and made my visit to this beautiful and interesting place one that I will always remember.

Being in a remote village in the rain forest is the best experience. Lots of small restaurants family run to choose from. The sound of the river rushing down the valley was fabulous. The locals were all very friendly and said hello and waved.

Bukit Lawang's adjacent Guning Lawang National Park (home to...
Bukit Lawang's adjacent Guning Lawang National Park (home to wild orangutans, elephants, rare tigers and even rarer rhinoceroses) is a SEA tourist hidden gem. The tourist area is compact, facing the tumbling Sungei Bohorok that drains the park and hosts casual river drifts that are entertaining.
The highlight for us was a guided trip (we used Sumatra Vibes and they were excellent) into the park to look for wildlife. It's a moderately challenging day even if you're gym-fit (and not recommended for the unfit), but rewarding when you catch a glimpse of orange fur high in the canopy. After minutes of scrutiny, you're rewarded with a curious look from a moon-faced orangautan (or her infant, if you're as fortunate as we were). Less challenging to find were pigtailed macaques. We heard but didn't see hornbills. There are overnight and even multi-day tours that take you deep into the park but we didn't do those.
On your arrival day, if you are adventurous you can book a tour to the Bat Cave. It's only 2.5km of pleasant walking from the tourist trip, but the climb down into the cave is for the nimble and fit. Once inside the cave, there are bats, birds, snakes, spiders and plenty of tight spaces to challenge the adventuresome. (Our two adult sons liked it; my wife and I did half the climb down and decided it was too much. We returned to the departure point and waited.)
The food is good and cheap, but the real stars are the locals: they are so friendly that they reminded us of Bali in the 1980s before mass tourism ruined the vibe.
If you've "done" the rest of the SEA tourist destinations, Bukit Lawang would be #2 on my list after Angkor Wat for the adventurous.

Bukit Lawang is a very great village and I would recommend everyone to visit. It is not only full of very nice friendly families, but also a place to rewind and maybe catch up with some other travellers.
Especially the Jungle Trekking and Rafting was a once in the lifetime opportunity. We got a lot of information about the jungle and its economics as well as great entertainment and food.
I would love to visit again in future.
