The town is easy to get around and has plenty of places to eat. Sadly the River Taw looks very polluted with brown foam floating down it, which gives the town a rather dilapidated feel. Otherwise a pleasant [place to stay

Barnstaple is a great base for touring north Devon.
Barnstaple is a great base for touring north Devon. There are good link roads that take you through to north Cornwall and the whole of north Devon. Don’t like driving the bus service is excellent although when it’s busy there are slight delays just allow yourselves the time for this. Barnstaple is a lovely town with lots a shops and some are Independant. We are looking to move to the area to be nearer our daughter

This is a nice little west country town on the estuary of the Taw river, with easy access (by car) to surfing beaches of Croyde and Woolacombe bay, and to Exmoor for hiking. It's easy to get around the town on foot. Bike rental is available for going farther afield. There are some excellent restaurants, notably Tiffins (Indian). I lead other cyclists on the Devon Coast to Coast cycle Trail , & Barnstaple is near the start or finish depending on whether you are going south or north. I normally go to the Hunters Lodge just south of Barnstaple they are excellent but they were full at the time. Tarka Trail , Grit stone path, Drakes Trail etc

Barnstaple is a charming town with a good range of architecture but particularly after dark the town is full of beggars, drunks, drug addicts giving the town a very unsafe and grubby feel. The Police and Council appear to have given up on improving the social environment and this probably impacts on the town’s tourist industry.

Great value for money. We ordered the breakfast and they also let my father in law come for the very cheap breakfast (cooked beautifully and again, great value for money) so that saved him a fortune as his hotel breakfast was very pricey. Wonderful fun pub to enjoy and felt well at home. Thanks for a fantastic trip to Barnstaple! Photo of the nearby Valley of the Rocks - well worth a walk there.

I did not tell you until I arrived that I was gluten free so it was wonderful to have these hot crumpets for my breakfast. Very big cosy bed with a good thick duvet. Kitchen was just absolutely incredible. Looks like a cudbored but you open it up and its a full kitchen unit. The hotel was even better than we could have hoped for in every way. The whole hotel was a great experience from the staff to decor to quality if the room. In fact the bathroom was so clean and smart it looked like it had never been used. As a reception venue it was perfect with staff that were attentive and very helpful.
