Magome Chaya, hotel in Nakatsugawa

Just 40 metres from restored Edo-era post town Magome-Juku, Chaya Hotel has simple traditional rooms with futon bedding and a tatami-mat floor.

Amazing location! If you want (or not) to walk the Magome-Tsumago trail, this accommodation is literally perfect in terms of position. You can take a small walk around the village's trail at dusk or dawn, so beautiful and peaceful. The accommodation is a traditional ryokan, extremely cleaned. Also common WC and bath area, very cleaned too. Since it's a traditional building, wood sliding doors and walking on the corridors can make you feel a bit under pressure after dinner time, as you may be afraid of disturbing others guests. In our experience all other guests were respectful of moving around as quite as possible. We had a great sleep, the room for 2 people is really big. Dinner & breakfast are at a fixed time, no exceptions. It make absolutely sense once you arrive in the village. The meals have an honest price and the traditional ryokan's food was fresh and simple, really tasty.

馬籠ふるさと学校 Magome Furusato Gakkou, hotel in Nakatsugawa

Situated in Nakatsugawa and only 20 km from Ōi, 馬籠ふるさと学校 Magome Furusato Gakkou features accommodation with mountain views, free WiFi and free private parking.

Lovely property, renovated school so was really interesting. There is an old sports hall where you can play basketball, a kitchen and lounge, an abandoned baseball court. Sumo ring, the list goes on. Three of the staff in particular, Yuki, Gai and Ayana were brilliant, extremely welcoming and funny, couldn’t do enough to help us and made our night.

Getting to our ryokan was a simple bus ride to the town from the train station. We were graciously greeted by the host of the ryokan. Delicious traditional dinner with many small dishes, all prepared with care. We started our hike early from Magome to Tsuamgo without many tourists which was a plus to take in the tranquility of the trail. The waterfalls along the way were impactful. Stopped for lunch in Tsumago and had cold soba with grilled fish, simple but delicious. If you decide to take the bus back to Magome in the late afternoon, be prepared to wait, there may be a line and the bus only runs every half hour, depending on the day.

We stayed in Nakatsugawa in order to spend time walking on the Nakasendo Trail. It was a good home base for doing so! It’s possible to take a cab or a bus to the post towns to start your walk, or to end it. Nakatsugawa is also known for its abundant chestnut snacks and sweets which we sampled and truly enjoyed. It was really nice to be in a part of Japan that has fewer tourists and is more quiet.

This is about Magome Juku - not Nakatsugawa.

This is about Magome Juku - not Nakatsugawa. Frankly whilst it's quaint, picturesque and reasonably true to form it's frankly a bit of a tourist trap and quite crowded. The buildings are almost all souvenir shops or restaurant / tea houses. With a few exceptions many are selling the same stuff, usually at higher prices than can be bought elsewhere. Glad we went but won't return

As previously reviewed, we are still annoyed that we had to argue at length with the staff (over half an hour) to have the sofa bed made up with linen. Their policy apparently is to only provide linen when there are 3 guests sharing the room advertised as 'Double Bed plus Sofa' and confirmed in writing via booking.com that I had booked a room with 2 beds. The hotel was demanding further payment otherwise my friend and I were expected to share the bed. They eventually agreed to make an exception. The air con unit also only had instructions in Japanese and we found it impossible to turn it down The room was very small and the aircon unit sounded all night as if we were flying in an airplane.

Nakatsugawa was a very pleasant town with an excellent shopping centre and good restaurants. Soba noodle seem to be a specialty in many. It was also a handy base for taking a bus to Magome for the Nakasendo Way walk to Tsumago and in the opposite direction to Ochiai, via the historic stone-paved 800m road.

Our primary reason for visiting was the walk from Magome to Tsumago. It's a lovely outing. Very enriching to see Japanese countryside after the big cities of central Honshu. The quality and restfulness of Iwasu-so was an unexpected delight.

Oh gosh, what a place! Nakatsugawa is such an incredible place and should be on more traveler's itineraries. I loved the ryokan stay, and this one is way more affordable than most any other place in Japan. 3 minutes walking from train station. Staff - so friendly! Free luggage storage before or after your stay. Right next to a very nice coffee shop, public transport, restaurants, and supermarkets. The lounge area is heated and super pleasant with great wifi. Free coffee/tea also. Best place to stay in Nakatsugawa, I would think.

Front desk is superb. They have nicely folded origami to give out to little children - and my daughter was delighted! The rooms were nice and clean. We have two non-connected rooms, but as it was the peak travel season, we were glad we found a nice hotel like this one. Its location was also excellent. If you stay here, you must eat at the Prince Matsuba, Nakatsugawa - just opposite the hotel! During my entire stay in Chubu, this restaurant provides the best food at the most reasonable price and great servings.

Nagataki is an amazing little sanctuary of preserved traditional Japanese homes. The gardens and small pathways between offer a nice area to meander in any season. The homes are extremely well kept and it truly feels like stepping back in time. The warmth of traditional woodwork and tatami offer an incredible experience. Washrooms are renovated and modern. Public bath is located steps away within the facility. Food was exceptional with myriad of unique local tastes and seasonal twists.

Large, traditional home with beautiful Scandinavian touches. We stayed in March, so the home was generally chilly, but the host provided many ways to find warmth - mini-splits, stoves, cozy down comforters. He was always helpful and cheerful. We had the whole place to ourselves, so the experience was like living in Japan long ago. Interesting little town, with friendly townsfolk and host. We had both supper and breakfast in town, and were sad to leave.

    * Truly exceptional host. Kind, genuine and made our stay unforgettable. Highlights were his excellent recommendations and going above and beyond to help us. * Amazing decor and ambiance. It truly felt like we got to experience what it was like living in Japan in the first half of the 1900s. Cannot recommend this Guesthouse for the vibe and interior enough. * Great location if you would like to experience a more local and authentic side of Japan.

Guesthouse located in the heart of Magome’s historic old town. Easy to get to (by bus or taxi) from Nagatsugawa Station. Kento is a very kind host and was always available if needed; he took his time showing me the entire guesthouse. Meals not included but Kento booked me a kaiseki dinner at Haginoya (5 min walk from guesthouse) and the entire meal was top quality!

What a fantastic stay we had!!! Keiko is a fantastic host, who cooks like a dream. Our favourite stay of our 3 weeks in Japan. The room we had was spacious and spotless. We walked to Tsumago and got the bus back so stayed 2 nights rather than doing baggage transfer. Use Nakatsugawa train station and get the bus to Magome Cannot recommend this place enough.
