The food was amazing! We had an excellent breakfast before walking the Kumono Kodo trail and the lunch bento box was delicious as well.
Nice smell of incense on arrival. The dining room was very cool with alot of American memorabilia. I love the saloon doors that lead to the bathroom.
Really close to kii tanabe and Isakyas as well.

I got here dusty and tired after a long backwards Kumano-Kodo with an extra day walking from Takajiri-oji to the winery. I was very glad the walk here was my final day and would recommend it as such for any other backward pilgrims. It was considerably harder to navigate the trail than the Nakahechi route and at times very steep - there's one section where you have to pull yourself up with a knotted rope attached to a tree. It is not a well travelled path at all but it was peaceful and beautiful and I'm glad I gave the day to the walk. (I started in Takahara at kiri-no-sato, so the day was down to Takajiri-oji and then back up. My map was in Japanese but the woman in the tourist bureau was very helpful. Yes you do have to walk up the steepest path at the start, not the road - (it feels like a storm drain) - and then there's a tiny tiny way into the trees otherwise you end up in someone's backyard.)
I just wanted a boozy drink, and all the food I could eat. I was not disappointed on either front. I was fed in my room and it was an expensive meal before the booze, and all the more expensive as I was thirstier than I needed to be. Incredible Valpolicella red wine imported by the host from Italy, priced reasonably but you pay for what you get.
It really is a GUEST HOUSE. You are in their house. They are making an incredible thing though, farming as they can, hosting as they can around it, employing locals, making this obscure part of an old Kumano-Kodo into a really positive place either to gather before you start or to decompress when you are finished.

Staff was able to provide information clearly and was fluent in English. He was also very kind to pick us up from the train station for free. He also provided suggestions for sight seeing and restaurants. Highly recommend the accommodation due to the service and facilities.

Tanabe was our starting point for our Kumano Kodo trek so we stayed in Tanabe only one day not realizing how much there is to do in Tanabe. If we ever come to Tanabe again, we will be sure to stay longer to enjoy all that there is to do there. I think we could have stayed a whole week if we weren't going on our trek.

Having visited Japan so many times, this trip was probably the best of all. I followed the Kumano Kodo Pilgrimage and experienced both the people, the culture and the religion of ancient Japan. I spent in total about 4 days walking and all of the accommodations (family run b&b and a hot spring hotel) was all very clean, with tasty food and friendly people. I'd love to go back again and experience the other less famous trails of the same region.
Place is located on the mountain with a fantastic view of the hills down below, sits right on the Kumano Kodo route (Takahara), and an excellent relaxing stopover. Dinner and breakfast were excellent with a mixed of Japanese and cuisines from other cultures; quality of food was superb. Guests of different nationalities used this place as a rest point. The friendly host interacts with guests who were made to feel at home; he even played the guitar for us! Memorable stay.
Room is clean, no smell at all, walking distance from train station. Plenty of food options around the area.
It has fridge in the room! Perfect to store our rice ball from 7-11.
Owner is kindly allow us to store our luggage without cost for 4-5 days during our kumano kodo hike.
Lastly, we also impressed with the light in our room (not sure other room has same light), it allow adjustments of brightness and set to night/sleeping ambience mode.
The hotel is really comfortable, our room had a kotatsu in it. A mexican restaurant is part of the hotel. You can relax, eat and drink there (it stays open until late). The hotel provides sandals for you to walk to the onsen on the river.
The location is great (near bus stations).
The owners are the best, super kind and welcoming.
Thank you very much!
The guest house was very spacious, comfortable, and beautiful, located in an old Japanese home. Shino was a wonderful host — she’s very responsive and helpful, she arranged a car back to the trail in the morning, and the meals she prepared for us were delicious. Good stop along the Kumano Kodo trail!
Minshuku WAGO is the place to stay in Chikatsuyu if you are hiking the Kumano Kodo. The location couldn't be better, the food is excellent, the accommodations are great, and Ike, the owner/operator is awesome and went above and beyond to make the stay enjoyable. Highly recommend
Check in and out was super easy. Very comfortable as we needed a place to stay as we walked the Kumano Kodo and it was difficult finding a place that was available so we were so grateful to have this option. Highly recommend for those wanting something simple and available.
The property was very comfortable with everything you need. The hosts were very kind and insisted on giving us a lift from the Tanabe train station and up to the start of the Kumano Kodo trail. They even dropped off our luggage at the luggage forwarding company.
Super nice place, I loved it. You can easily start the Kumano Kodo from there. The owner is a great guy. He offered to pick me up from Tanabe station and gave me a ride to a supermarket so I could get vegan food. Thanks again! 🙏
I would def stay there again.

Very kind host, we had some nice talk with host about Japan. He cooked us really delicious okonomiyaki. It was nice diner and breakfast with other guests. We tried sake. Everything you want after long Kumano Kodo walk! 😊
Excellent services and location facing the Tanabe JR station , the owner is so kindly and helping to our extra need , warm-harted to provide traveler convenient.
Definitely recommendation

Amazing new place in Tanabe. Rooms are huge and incredibly comfortable. Tea and coffee provided on the house also very close to train station and Kumano Kodo information center.
Directly by the train station, so it's a great place to start your Kumano Kodo journey. Everything was clean and you had everything you need. I even could wash my clothes there.
It was an incredible deal. It is no frills but just what you need to start your Kumano Kodo trek. I like the open kitchen to heat my water before my trek.
