Hotel Universal, hotel in Geres

Nudging the Spanish border and situated within Portugal’s only National Park, Peneda-Gerês, Hotel Universal features an internal courtyard with hanging gardens. It also offers an outdoor pool garden.

The property was central, the staff were lovely, it was clean. It would have been brilliant in its heyday, but is now rather tired looking. We loved that our room looked out over gushing water, great sound.

Hotel Apartamentos Geres Ribeiro, hotel in Geres

This apartment hotel is located in the heart of the Peneda Geres National Park in Costa Verde. It offers self-catering accommodation, an outdoor swimming pool and an à la carte restaurant.

It was clean and felt bigger than on the pictures. Even though a bit far from the accommodation, the pool was great. The hotel parking is an extra but a good deal.

Beleza Serra Guide Hotel, hotel in Geres

Recently renovated, Beleza Serra Guide Hotel is ideally located in the picturesque Peneda-Gerês National Park, right by the Caniçada lake.

The room was spotless, the bed comfortable and the view amazing. Breakfast was included with a good selection and endless coffee. We had a meal in the restaurant which was excellent and great value for money. The area is picturesque with Geres national park, a 15/20 minute drive away and the Sao Bento Church, 5 minutes drive away. We stayed for 2 nights off season, so it was quiet. The couple that run the hotel couldn't do enough for us, both spoke English, so my faltering Portuguese was not a problem. It was my wifes birthday, a cake was provided and they sang happy birthday, which was a lovely touch. This summed the owners up! There's a carpark outside so it had everything for me. I definitely recommend this hotel.

We came on the bus from Braga.

We came on the bus from Braga. Actually, there was a one-day strike and we took a taxi. We took the bus back. The bus runs infrequently and you have to buy the ticket on the bus. Once in Geres, if you don't have a car, you can find out about the trails from the tourist info center so you can get into the park. We also opted for a 4 hr tour with Carlos at Lobos Tours and it was worth the $40 to see all the parts of the park and some of the small villages and the waterfalls. He was born and raised there and has alot of knowledge of the area. One bummer of the visit was the Parque de Termas is only open intermittently and was closed when we were there. Apparently this is a problem. If you want a hot spring dip, you need to go to the Spanish border. Not far away, but need transport. It is a nice village overall.

Geres is a unique place where you can see nature in its best, there are so many attractions even on low-session, and plenty of native restaurants along all routes, i have been there for 5/6 years in a row and I am still impressed with the place as you can see my own photographs attached. Rio Caldo on the lower edge of the park is stunning.

Rio Caldo on the lower edge of the park is stunning. Views are amazing. There are plenty of bars and cafes, and a small well stocked supermarket. It has a good public transport network. We hired a kayak twice during our stay with AML.

Don't try to go to Geres for a long weekend, it's not enough time but if that's all you have, then don't miss it! Amazing hiking and quaint villages all around. We chased waterfalls for 3 days and loved it. The Sao Bento da Porta Aberta Sanctuary was so unique and loved the juxtaposition of the old and new churches. Stunning tiles in the new museum. We also had a quick stop at the Vilarinho das Furnas dam. We love dams but still cool to see. A short easy walk from the dam is a cute waterfall and a perfect spot for a picnic. Keep your eyes peeled for wild horses and shepherds with their cows and goats. The town of Geres itself is small but I really enjoyed a quick stroll around town and found some great artisan shops to get souvenirs.

We had a fantastic time in Geres.

We had a fantastic time in Geres. The staff at Baltazar Hotel were extremely helpful and kind- especially Orlando. We had a challenging and beautiful hike and spent one afternoon with a guide who showed us so much of the park. The food and generosity of the Baltazar staff was wonderful. We would come back for a longer stay next time and recommend to anyone.

Very nice picturesque location, beautiful lake at the bottom...

Very nice picturesque location, beautiful lake at the bottom of the surrounding mountains near the hotel. Hotel was very clean, and big. I was pleasantly surprised. Polite man at the reception when we got there, very attentive and prompt when requests were made. My only advise to anyone checking out in the early hours, e.g. around 03.30am is to allow extra time because there may not be anyone readily available as they will be carrying out other tasks (as the polite lady mentioned when the bell at reception wasnt attended to with the usual promptness). Other than that, extremely wonderful stay

This is one of the best accommodations we've stayed in in Spain/Portugal. A fantastic value. Big kitchen/dining area. Separate living room with a television, games, and a guitar. Comfortable bedrooms with private bathrooms. Very clean. Staff is helpful and kind. Great location right near the bus stop, grocery stores, and of course mountains! We were going to stay a couple nights, and ended up staying five! Highly recommend.

Location right in middle of Gerês, helpful & friendly staff (tho not speaking Portuguese was a challenge there, having a translation app helps!), wonderful view of river & mountains from the room, nice quality and variety of breakfast items. Staff helped arrange activities for us, as well as directed us to the local taxi when we couldn’t find an Uber ride, which we very much appreciated.

The elevated location gives a great view across to the main village, and it's good to be away from the busy road but still within easy reach of it. We got a free upgrade to a room with a balcony facing the valley and this made a big difference, and would be worth requesting. Parking in the hotel was convenient. Breakfast plentiful but unexceptional. Good value for money.

This hotel was a great find! Our balcony and bathroom were huge (much bigger than expected), the room is clean and warm, the beds are comfy, parking is free and super easy, check-in/out was quick and painless, and the location is excellent. We were only here for one night and didn't have enough time to try out all of the facilities, but will definitely come back!

We stayed at this hotel April 2022 which is low season and it was really nice, we might have been the only guests and the staff still made sure we were treated well and even had breakfast laid out for us (simple but enough for us). We also changed our dates of our stay without an issue. The property is well kept and pool is sparkling blue.

A wonderful hotel for a break. We stayed at what they call the Loft. This was our second visit to the hotel and it definitely will not be our last. We enjoyed very much the friendly atmosphere and the terrific location. Great for all sorts of activities around the national park and for visits to Spain.

The location of the hotel is very good. There is a parking which is useful during the trip to Geres. Bed was comfy and the room was clean. The breakfast was basic but enough to get some energy before the hike. The view is nice and it's a quiet area. Close to the hotel there are some restaurants.

Incredible balcony view of the valley above Geres. A short walk to nearby restaurants. A large kitchen for cooking anything at home. Sweeping night skies with stars that look like they're right in front of you. A short drive / walk to several trails / paths.
