This family run place with cosy rooms is located within walking distance from the entrance to Sinharaja National Park. The family offers the following: - The cool Son brings you cold beer, helps and organises cheap local transport and is an amazing guide who helps you spot rainforest life (and get good photos of it), plus make sure you make it home in one piece. - The sweet Mom cooks some of the best food we had in Sri Lanka. Asking for the spicy option is highly recommended. - The kind Dad takes care of the place and kills any giant spider that may enter your room with a broomstick. Prices are reasonable and upfront in a remote paradise.

My recent stay at Charming Dark Lodge in River was nothing short of exceptional, marking it as the best homestay experience I have ever encountered. From the moment we arrived, we were greeted with warmth and hospitality that exceeded all expectations. The highlight of our stay was undeniably our incredible host, who spared no effort in ensuring our comfort and satisfaction. From delicious lunches and dinners to delightful surprises and the most mouth-watering fish barbecue - probably the best meal I have had in the two months I have been in Sri Lanka. Beyond the culinary delights, our room was a sanctuary of comfort and style. Immaculately clean, equipped with a kitchen containing everything one could possibly need, and beautifully built and decorated. Originally intending to stay for four nights, we found ourselves captivated by the charm of Charming Dark Lodge, extending our stay to twelve nights. Departing was bittersweet, as we had grown attached to the unparalleled hospitality and the tranquil ambiance of our temporary home. A particularly memorable moment was celebrating my birthday during our stay. Our host went above and beyond to ensure it was an unforgettable occasion, adding a personal touch that truly made me feel special. Without a doubt, if I ever find myself in Sri Lanka again, Charming Dark Lodge will be my first choice for accommodation. The location is great but not if you don't have scooter or other transport, it is not near the central way or beach by feet.
