The hut was beautiful and very luxurious. At first arrival we thought the jungle was a bit meh, but in actuality we saw many birds right from our terrace. Including several Tucans (our hut was called Tucán). Dinner was very nice. Breakfast box to take to Calakmul was very convenient. Very relaxing place.

Very good value, walking distance to the bus station. Oscar was super friendly, helped organise transport to Calakmul for the very best price we could find. Cabin was basic but comfortable, mozzy net included. In terms of being a place to sleep for one night so you can visit an incredible Mayan site (Calakmul), this was good.

Great place to stay! No frills but the staff are very friendly, there are a couple of fans in the room to help make the temp cooler, and a bug net for keeping the mosquitos out. I would definitely stay here again.

Wonderful setting in the forest. You can slightly hear the highway, but the trees do a great deal to block the noise. Probably the best option for staying in Xpujil when comparing to other places to stay. The pictures definitely match what you get. The kitchenette has everything you need and they provide some snacks and a few cervezas to enjoy. I would not hesitate to stay here again. Facilities felt very safe and secure (gated). Wish we could have stayed another night.

We stopped here to break the journey between Bacalar and Palenque. The place is in the middle of nowhere but we got a good night's sleep. There are one or maybe two of these cabins. They are a long way back from the road so you cannot hear the railway construction traffic. Breakfast was lovely as were the staff. Plenty of water, both hot and cold and the Aircon was needed for us. Adjacent to the property on the main road is a petrol station and there is a cafe there, Gouter Cafe that serves excellent food so there is no need to go into town to eat. The price is way above other places if better standing elsewhere in Mexico but when you are in the middle of nowhere and you need to stop ...
Hotel Casa Maya Calakmul features free bikes, garden, a terrace and restaurant in Chicanna. The accommodation provides a 24-hour front desk, airport transfers, a shared kitchen and free WiFi.
It is well placed for some fascinating archaeology.
It is well placed for some fascinating archaeology.
But you need to be up for a "half horse" town.
To get to a basic restaurant we walked through the middle of roadworks.
Most roads giving access to the hotel were closed for road works and of course there are no diversions..you just work it out!
But the archaeology is fabulous though to get to Calakmul was a 3 hour drive each way .

Beautiful site right off the road.
Beautiful site right off the road. Walk to the Mirador Maya Hotel. The grounds are beautifully maintained, and as of September, 2023, you can climb everything. There's no pyramid, but the main structure is very tall and impressive. Bring bug spray. The mosquitoes are pretty intense.

Xpujil itself is not worth visiting.
Xpujil itself is not worth visiting. It is a good town to stay if you are travelling trough the area (for example when visiting Calakmul) and need a place to sleep. There is a small supermarket and a nice pizza restaurant. Be aware that there are only two banks and their ATM's at the time of our visit both of them did not have any money in them for two days.

Xpujil is located more or less at the center of the Calakmul...
Xpujil is located more or less at the center of the Calakmul municipality (which is large). Although this little town is not particularly oriented towards tourism, it is the best location to stay connected & have all services within easy reach so you can move between main sites and attractions around the Calakmul area.
Near Xpujil you will find from four to six striking archaeological sites and all of them are worth the visit. Of course, the most impressive one is Calakmul but there is plenty to do beyond that outstanding stop. For instance, you can ask a cab to take you to "Ejido 20 de Noviembre" and visit plenty of craft workshops (wood carving, embroidery by hand and by machine among others). I really enjoyed my visit to Hilos de Vida, Amanecer de Rio Bec & Artesanos Sabios since they give you a nice explanation on their crafts and sometimes they even offer a class for you to take (they also can get you a guide if you need translation aid).
Whether you are traveling with family, couple or by yourself, I really recommend to book no less than two nights in Casa Ka'an (about 8 to 10 minutes by car near Xpujil), 'cause they have everything you expect and a little bit more in a really cute jungle lodge composed by very independent villas which happen to be surrounded by the most wonderful environment. Needless to say that a chat with the manager (Nicolás) is always enlightening so if you catch him ask for his views on the area.
Last but no least... you will boost your experience in the region if you move around in a 4WD or even better in your own bike.

Not a lot of options for housing around the Calakmul...
Not a lot of options for housing around the Calakmul Biosphere. None are really close and you need a vehicle to get to the main part of the park. Xpujil, is little neighborhood town, not too close to ruins or highway. We enjoyed walking around town and looking at birds and the old frame houses.

Our only reason for staying in Xpujil was to visit Calakmul.
Our only reason for staying in Xpujil was to visit Calakmul. But as it turns out, it is not the closest lodging to go to the ruins. Conhuas is nearer and has a few hotels that would have worked better for our itinerary, since we were going west. The town of Xpujil has very little of interest and the meal we had was one of the least successful of our trip. We ate dinner at Sazon Veracruzana, sitting right on the dusty noisy main road (186) that runs through the town. It had the more favorable reviews in LP. Calakmul was a great experience though!
I chose to stay at Casa Maran because it is a great base for visiting several Mayan sites. Even though Xpujil is a very small town, the hotel is surprisingly sophisticated, with smart decor, stylish rooms with very modern bathrooms, and an attached quality restaurant and bar with outdoor terrace. It is immaculately clean. I had a room at the back and it was very quiet so I slept well every night. The staff were friendly and manager Juan speaks good English which is very helpful. I enjoyed my stay very much.
The room was very comfortable, had a kitchenette and patio with hammocks, good wifi. I highly recommend a trip to see the Volcan de los Murcielagos. About 25 minutes west every evening at around 6PM, a highlight of my Mexico trip this time. Guide was 75 pesos, about $4 US! The drive to Calakmul was very long, 1.5 to 2 hours each way from Xpujil. Calakmul is impressive but barely worth the drive. The highlights were spider monkeys and an ocelated turkey.
Really clean houses and comfortable. We Saw monkeys, tukan and a fox in the forest near the houses. Its only a short drive from the village. Friendly staff.
Its true that xpujil and calakmul are under construction at the moment because of the tren maya. But still it was very much worth the visit. We were at the ruins with only a handful of other people. Really an amazing experience and eco aldea is s perfect place to visit them.
Moises was very kind and helpful, and always ready to assist via text. The insect sounds at night are beautiful. Everything was exceptionally clean and professional in the details. Nice big property with lots of trees. Appreciated the fruit, snacks and drinks. The air plants on the property were beautiful. We slept very well. It was such a nice place to come back to relax in after long days spent exploring ruins.
The property is a rural hotel in a village lost in the middle of a tropical forest. There were some imperfections, but overall the standard was high given the circumstances. The room was clean, dry, airy, and had a working AC. The wifi connection was quite good too. There is a hotel restaurant serving simple and good meals. All the staff was very friendly and nice to talk to (in Spanish).
For a hotel locateded somewhat away from (touristic) civilization the staff was able to talk english quite well and they were friendly (bonus: the waiter in the evening is a magnificent cocktail maker)
If you want a couple of nights in the "jungle", hear all kinds of animals and no city/car noices this is the perfect place.
But don't forget mosquito spray!
Very calm location in a secluded forest. The village Xpujil can be quite noisy due to the many trucks taht are crossing the village on the main road. The Cabañas Aldea Maya (actually just one recently finished, another one under construction and some planned) offererd everything we needed during our stay. We highly reccomend it for couples.
Very slightly outside of Xpujil, so you don't have the noise or pollution (mainly dust) problems that you have in town. You can still walk into town in about 10 minutes. The breakfast is EXCELLENT, and the owners are happy to assist with whatever questions or needs you have. AC works great, although it can be quite cool at night naturally.
The owner is an exceptionally nice lady, genuinely willing to help. Breakfast was just when and what we have asked for. The house (bungalow) is not for people that are looking for major chain hotels, but it is just fine for overnight stay in really small rural location in peninsula of Yucatan.
It’s extremely close to the ADO. The Pizzeria in front of the hotel has excellent food, the staff were very friendly and the room, while small, was very comfortable, great AC and a nice hot shower. You can even arrange all of the trips to the ruins and the bat cave! Just outstanding
A perfect base for exploring Maya sites at Xpujil and beyond. Clean, spacious rooms with all necessary facilities. Big plus was the unexpectedly nice breakfast, lunch, dinner area with very friendly staff and value for money food (there aren't that many dining options in Xpujil).
In the jungle just a few km outside of town and close to the new Maya train station ( when it's ready)
Nice nature jungle trail starting at the property amongst the hills of ancient unescavated small Maya ruins ( hard to destinguish but they are there)
We loved the spacious bedroom and Miguel was really attentive, helping us book a visit of Calakmul quite late (when he couldn't be our guide). This place is just off the main road in Xpujil which was really convenient as well. We would stay here again.
Would be an excellent location for visiting the ruins of Calakmul. I stayed late at the ruins and then spent the night here so as to not have to drive-in the dark.. Secure parking.. Found a taco stand within walking distance.
Nice hotel and nice rooms. Clean. Great breakfast. Nice staff. Pool. The property is still being developed into a plaza with restaurants and stores, so in the future, I think it will be a really fun place to stay.
