A beautiful 16th century castle blissfully stuck in time. It turns out the chateau was previously owned by Gabrielle Pauline Bouthillier de Chavigny, known as countess d'Adhémar, who was dame du palais (lady-in-waiting) to Queen Marie Antoinette in 1770–1789. She chose to retire to this country estate after the start of the French Revolution in 1789. She sold it to the de Pommereau family in 1809, who still own it to this day.
We were the only guests staying for the night and were able to roam the grounds and explore the shabby, yet so quaintly, decorated rooms. It may need a little TLC, but we absolutely loved it, even after waking up in the middle of the night with a chilling child portrait staring down at us, terrifying tools in the bathroom and what can only be described as a child's wedding dress displayed (or floating if you ask Jo) in the hall way... an experience to say the least!

The accommodation was perfect for us. The surroundings were beautiful and tranquil. The house was modern and clean, with all the facilities we needed, like an iron, and a coffee maker for the mornings. Despite it being very hot outside, inside it was nice and cool. And the owner was very friendly and accommodating.

a good location close to the town centre. The view out the rear of the hotel is special, from the breakfast room and your room if it is that side of the building. Breakfast was excellent. The staff were super friendly and helpful. The hotel had been recently renovated so everything was fresh. The pool was a welcome option after a hot day on the bike (during June).

Decent bike storage in a nightclub area which is being refurbished. Plenty of nearby restaurants. Reasonable 10.5€ breakfast

The quiet location, yet only 10 minutes drive from Sancerre. The welcome, the breakfast.
This is a 500 year old chateau, not a hotel. This is the first thing you need to keep in mind to get your expectations in line. Secondly, it is about 10-12 minutes from Sancerre, so it is truly "in the countryside.". That being said, it was a wonderful break from normal hotels. The property has all sorts of charm. The hostess was lovely – attentive and spoke perfect English (which was helpful for my wife and me). I would highly recommend this so long as you know what to expect. Also, the value proposition is excellent, and it was nice to stay in the countryside for one day in our travels through the Loire Valley.
