Where do I start? This place is amazing to stay at! I regret that we only stayed one night! The room was clean and the beds were comfortable. Breakfast was included and it was buffet style. Due to it being so early in the season, a lot of restaurants were closed, but the reception staff recommended a lovely BBQ place a short walk away which was delicious! The baths were to die for! We used both the private and public baths.

伊藤屋 features mountain views, free WiFi and free private parking, set in Zao Onsen, 200 metres from Zao Onsen Ski Resort. Each accommodation at the 3-star ryokan has quiet street views, and guests can enjoy access to a hot spring bath and a public bath. The accommodation offers full-day security, luggage storage space and organising tours for guests.

The elderly couple who runs the place were friendly & welcoming. Besides it being a lovely and old traditional inn, it's interesting to see they keep nostalgic antic items such as old record players, cassette players (a rarity nowadays) - it was nice to have breakfast in the dining listening to classic songs. I enjoyed the public bath here after returning from the freezing cold outdoor - though the onsen here is superhot & high in acidity here compared with other onsens which I've been.

Only a 5-minute walk from the Yamagata Zao Onsen Ski Resort, Omiya Ryokan features Japanese-style rooms, hot spring baths and massage treatments. The hotel offers Japanese dining and ski storage facilities.

Wonderful location in Zao Onsen, and we were able to use the Ryokan's shuttle from Yamagata station - It's also only a 5-10 minute walk from Zao Onsen's bus terminal for trips back down to Yamagata or if the shuttle times don't suit/are full. Also only a 5-10 minute walk to the Onsen's convenience store, as well as the gondola lifts up to various peaks around. It was unseasonably warm leading up to our visit and the wintersports season hadn't quite started yet, but there was snow on the shaded side of the valley. Food was fantastic, the kaiseki was stunning for all our meals and we were really able to sample a wide range of local dishes and ingredients and they tasted great. There is a nice selection of local Sake and Sochu/etc as well. The baths are lovely (as we stayed during winter, the outdoor baths were closed) and are cycled between genders after cleaning so you can experience both baths during a multi-night stay. They're quite cosy, with room for maybe only 5-10 people at most, but given the overall size of the Ryokan and other guests' schedules it was empty most times we went for a bath, and only with one or two other people the times it wasn't. The onsen water is as advertised, heavy on the sulfur, though the smell did not bother me (I did have a bit of a stuffy nose), and very therapeutic. We stayed in a Japanese-style room which was lovely, clean, stocked with amenities etc as one would expect. Staff were wonderful, struggled a little bit with very sparing English, but we managed to get by with our sparing Japanese as well.

Hosts were extremely helpful and friendly. They made sure we were comfortable with an extra futon, recommended vegetarian places, and showed us the onsen and where to rent equipment. It has a communal vibe, so extroverted people would love it.

Everything is really nice, it is an old style ryokan and very good hot spring. Room is spacious with view. Was able to use the washing machine for free! Located on the main hot spring street , walkable to the Ropeway. Lots of restaurants nearby however some required advance booking. The hosts are very lovely and nice. We loved our stay at Matsuo House. Taka, Oraphin and Yuuchan were amazing hosts. They were so welcoming and made us feel right at home. The rooms are traditiinL tatami rooms, futon beds. The lodge is right beside one of the public onsens and close to the chairlifts. Highlight of our ski trip to Japan. We will be back. Especially loved our morning greetings from 3 yo Yuuchan - "sleep well?" We sure did. Xx

Yoshidaya Ryokan is a beautifully presented traditional ryokan. Its right in the middle of the old part of Zao Onsen surrounded by historic buildings. This is a traditional Ryokan so be prepared to walk up stairs and use shared facilities. The rooms are very warm and comfortable and the Ryokan facilities are well presented and clean. The Hot Spring bath was wonderful! I will be staying at Yoshidaya again!
