“I had booked a private quadruple room with private bathroom for 1 night. When I arrived to checkin, I was told that room was not available to me. They said there was a problem with the room. I was very tired from travelling all day and didn’t know what to do. The hostel said that they didn’t have other private rooms but would put me on a camp bed in the staff room/kitchen. They said they would refund me. I was confused and tired but as I only had a short time in Bilbao and was leaving the next morning, I felt I didn’t have time to research and find another available hotel in central Bilbao at short notice on a busy Friday night. So I took the temporary bed in the staff kitchen on the basis there were no other rooms there and the reception said they would refund me. There were no blinds or curtains and the room did not look like a bedroom or apartment. It was clearly a communal staff room/ caretaker room (see photos). Unlike the other rooms which were separated from the building by a main coded door and then another room door with a key, the room i was given opened out directly onto the public stairway without a further secure door. As the night drew on, I could hear every sound from the stairwell and the front door. I felt like it was a mistake to have accepted this room and felt so unsafe that I had to barricade my door with chairs. Then, in the morning without any warning or notice, a male member of staff entered the room without knocking. The room was not secure and as a lone female traveller I felt unsafe. I left the property as soon as I could.
I have not received the refund despite his promise and me messaging them again through booking.com requesting the refund. The money has been deducted from my creditcard. The hostal said they have refunded it but there is no record of the refund to my card.
I would not stay here again and cannot recommend this to others.”
